Last month, I had the privilege of cooking for a weekend retreat at a fabulous cottage located about a minute’s walk from one of Ontario’s most beautiful beaches. The open concept design was grounded by a huge quartz island where guests could pull up a stool and chat (or help cook!) This state of the art kitchen boasted high-end appliances and as I peeked in all the drawers and cupboards, I was amazed at how well equipped and meticulously designed it was. I’m sure even Gordon Ramsey would call it heaven's kitchen! A huge table comfortably sat 10 people. The towering windows on 3 sides of this home allowed us to enjoy the vista of the dense forest filled with colourful maples, all red and gold. And did I mention that this “cottage” comfortably slept 12 of us?
All this for a family of 4?
Hardly.
It was built by a couple who saw the value of a camping ministry and wanted to provide a place for the camp's leadership to plan and pray. As children, they had been impacted by this ministry and wanted to invest in helping future generations reach their full potential.
Its been almost 50 years since that first handful of young boys gathered together, roasting wieners under the stars. Since then, over 100 young people have been trained then hired to be leaders. Adullum Camp Ministries is not just your typical boy scout camp. You can choose to sing choral music, learn to cook, be in a play, create sculpture, canoe, bike, hike, and so much more!
The point is that none of this would have happened without community. Wonderful things happen when people band together for a common purpose.
As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
By the way…
It’s been 40 years and here's what former camper, Diane has to say.
“My ability to speak in front of people as well as being able to commit things to memory were developed during my camp days. Today, I still have scripture verses pop into my mind when it seems I need them most. This camp ministry has had an enormous impact on my life.”
